Square Marie-Louise

by Vincent

Square Marie-Louise has its own impressive sized lake surrounded by a little park. it’s in fact one of the only six ponds left in the city of Brussels.

A large sized fountain is found in the middle of the pond

Can you tell me more about Marius Vos? I have a sculpture fountain in Limestone signed by Marius Vos. It is bigger than lifesize figures, 3, with a backdrop of waterfall, titled the "Song of Love".

I have found but very little information about Marius Vos. All that I managed to dig was that he won the gold medal for the “Birth of a Nation” sculpture in the international exhibition of Paris of 1937 and later made gift of it to the city of Brussels.

I lived on the Square Marie Louise over 30 years ago when I worked for the U.S. Department of State and was assigned in Brussels. Never lived any place classier before or since. My main memories are of the parking situation so tight that everytime I parked my car I broke a fender-mounted fog light. Also the poor ducks in the pond who would leave behind a webbed-foot every time the pond froze over. Each year, however, spring was delivered in truckloads of flowers that were planted in an afternoon. A great neighborhood restaurant was the Sablette. I wonder if it is still there.

That goes back quite a bit! I was but eight years old at that time and living in North America..

I did do a little search for you regarding the Sablette restaurant on the local yellow pages http://pagesdor.be but wasn't able to find it.

Thank you for checking on the Sablette. It was a long time ago. A lovely, young couple ran it. The husband was a wonderful cook, and they were charming hosts. I hope life has been good to them. My wife and I remember the Sablette fondly.

@William Cotter: I lived on Square Marie Louise from 2006-2008, while I was worked at NATO. Parking is a bit easier now. I had parking in my apartment building, but I often decided to park on the street. I do not recall the Sablette in the neighborhood. The ducks and the flowers are still there. As well as giant weeping willow and chestnut trees. My wife and I would walk our dog (and later our baby) around the pond 2x a day. I loved living there.

I lived in Square Marie Louise 40 from 1969 to 1974. It was one of the most beautiful places in Bruxelles. As winter seasons set in, a vehicle will come and pick up all the ducks before water froze. Parking was not that problem because our apartment had basement parking for residents. We have some photographs of that time. Can they be uploaded?
