The official Street Art itinerary expanded yet a little further again. In collaboration with Citydev.brussels and the non-profit organization Une Ville en Couleur, graffiti artist and painter Pablo Sozyone Gonzalez was asked to leave his mark on the 140 square meter wall of the old and decrepit building located at rue Francois Joseph Navez 178, 1000 Brussels.

The Corvus Corone mural by Sozyone can be found at Francois Joseph Navez 178, 1000 Brussels.

Anyone taking the Van Praet bridge come from Laeken into Brussels is now greeted by this beautiful creation from Sozyone that brightens up an otherwise dull looking neighborhood.

“To us, urban art can be an efficient tool for revitalizing a neighborhood. Ultimately, our goal is for the frescoes to highlight the city’s cultural dynamics,”

Benjamin Cadranel, General Administrator of CityDev.

The project was also carried out in collaboration with the non-profit organization Une Ville en Couleur. The association works towards the development of contemporary art in Brussels. The goal of this association is to offer everyone the opportunity to access the world of art while embellishing the city.

Street Art place d’Espagne

by Vincent August 25, 2020

Just behind the stairs as you coming from Brussels Central Station is where you will find one of the latest mural by French graffiti artist OAKOAK (Saint-Etienne, France). Just like my previous post of his work rue du chien marin, this was done once again at the invitation of Brussels’ minister of culture Karine Lalieux, who gave him free reign for a week to brighten up the streets of Capital.

Duck Hunt by Artist OakOak
The Japanese birds mural and others can be seen along the staircase at Place d’Espagne, Brussels, Belgium

In this particular piece, OakOak took inspiration from two different eras of Japanese culture. The birds are from 200 year old paintings from renowned artist Katsushika Hokusai while the pixelized duck comes from the popular game Duck Hunt, which was released on the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in 1984.

The work of another well known French artist, David Selor (Cognac, France) can be seen on the other end of the wall. Selor’s art is easily recognizable from the blue and white striped t-shirt “Mimil” character he created and uses to convey humorous or philosophical message.

"Embla" by Ouroboros

A Female French Stencil Artist, Camille Douchet (Lille, France) aka Ouroboros (pictures above and below) left her mark as well. Camille’s usually starts working from a photograph and with her skillful hands reproduces every every feature and detail. She deliberately chooses perfect strangers or lesser known personalities in the portrait she chooses.

The hand

Sadly I noticed the hand seen above has disappeared since my last visit

Anagard is one of the most prominent stencil artists of Indonesia, he was one of the first International talent invited by the city of Brussels to create a street art itinerary in the Capital.

Leprechaun by EVL (Edward Von Lôngus)

The Leprechaun above is from Estonian stencil artist Edward Von Lôngus AKA EVL (Tartu, Estonia). He has often been compared to Banksy for his anonymity and style, which often conveys social or political message. His art recently has earned the attention of the media and art critics for the use of augmented reality in his work.

Patrick by Trollux2Luxe

Last but not least our very own Frédéric Sainthomme aka Trollux2Luxe (Mons, Belgium). This artist loves to mix various themes in his work, you’ll find a melting pot of everything from the childish to the morbid. His collages often reveal a darker side when you take a closer look.

Wolfgang Tillmans is a world-renowned artist who has pushed the boundaries of photography and image creation. He first got noticed in the early '90's for pictures of his entourage and the techno music scene. His photos got picked up in a few urban culture magazines like i-D and Spex that documented alternative lifestyles linked to the techno and LGBTQI communities. In 2000, Wolfgang Tillmans was the first photographer to win the Turner Prize.

The artist, Henk De Ruddere gladly took up the project as he a firm supporter of Greta’s cause and the international youth movement to fight climate change.

“The way they organize is admirable. There is no violence, demolition or police. At their age I was only concerned with my love I am proud, but at the same time ashamed. I am a grandfather myself and my grandchildren also need a planet on which to live. If I can contribute, I will. ”

My work is a statement, the facade of the building is dark and dirty from years of exposure to exhaust fumes. The contrast with the long braids and Greta’s piercing gaze couldn’t be greater.”

Encq went on to say about his mural

After going on in Berlin, a pro-vegan message have been popping up in Brussels on about two dozen lights traffic lights and particularly those at major crossroads of the capital. Stop MEAT, Go VEGAN traffic lights

Vegan activists have found a new and clever way to promote their cause in Brussels. On about two dozen lights traffic lights, strategically positioned at major crossroads of the capital. As you can see in the pics, drivers now get red lights flashing a “STOP MEAT” while the green lights promotes to “GO VEGAN”. Apparently the idea originally came from a graffiti artist and militant for veganism/animal rights going under the name of Misteruncertain.

"Stop Meat" Red Light

On his Facebook page he wrote:

“Nice to see my efforts spreading far and wide. So many people spend their time living halfhearted and disinterested in others. It takes courage to be altruistic in a society that is self-centered and to be compassionate in a world that is egotistical.”

MISTERUNCERTAIN He went on to say:

“One act can transform the very core of someone else’s life. When benevolence is real, boundaries are nonexistent, limits fade, life is more abundant, and the gap between present reality and dreams, close. Animals are innocent beings and deserve to be protected and respected, not massacred for human greed. Veganism is the answer and justice for all life!”
