One of the many Belgian waffles shops in Brussels. Here located on rue de l’Étuve a few steps from the famous Manneken Pis statue. Recipe is below.

Attractive display of Belgian waffles with various toppings

The girl on the left is cooking a fresh batch using wafer irons

The one on the right now cutting them into even individual portions

Here another display showing prices

Want to try and make them in the comfort of your own home ?

Here’s the recipe for Belgian waffles:

  • In a mixing bowl put 250 grams of Flour with a spoonful of sugar, a large pinch of powdered vanilla, a small one of salt and eight egg yolks and mix it all together
  • Then slowly blend in half a liter of sweetened cream or fresh milk
  • Melt 250 grams of butter in a pan
  • Whip the eight egg whites until they are very stiff
  • Add the melted butter to the original mixture followed by the whipped egg whites
  • Lightly grease a waffle iron and heat
  • Fill one side with a good spoonful of the waffle mix and close the iron
  • Cook until it has a golden color
  • Serve with some icing sugar or the topping of your choice
  • Enjoy!

written by Vincent

The Broussaille mural can be found at 41 Rue du Marché au Charbon beside the Plattesteen café. A homage to the work of Frank Pé known for his Zoo and Broussaille comic strip albums. This street is also a very lively area of Brussels at night recommended for its cafés and bars all along it.

Cirio Cafe

written by Vincent

The Cirio Café is quite an institution in Brussels. Opened in 1886 it kept all the glory of its original Art Nouveau decor and as you enter the feeling of a place frozen in time is what first comes to mind. I doubt little has really changed since its opening. Sure worth a visit if you are looking for a place to have a drink in one of the few authentic style pubs remaining. Located on the right side of the stock exchange right in the heart of the city.

First view from the entrance

I found my way to an empty seat in the middle section

After a short wait my Maes beer finally arrived

Charles Karel Buls fountain

written by Vincent

The Charles Karel Buls statue is found at the Agora Square right next to the rue du marché aux herbes. It’s a memorial in the honor of Charles Buls who was mayor of Brussels from 1881 until 1899. He is remembered most of all today for his fight to vote laws to preserve and fund the restoration some of the best known jewels of the city like the Grand Place that are now considered a UNESCO World Heritage site.
