La Fleur en Papier Doré

by Vincent January 29, 2009
written by Vincent

The La Fleur en Papier Doré small maisonnette style house dating from the middle of the 18th century was once home to the convent of the sisters of Saint-Vincentius but somewhere in the first half of the 20th century changed vocation. Owned by Geert Van Bruaene (nicknamed le petit Gerard) the pub “La Fleur en Papier Doré (French) or Het Goudblommeke in Papier (Dutch)” became the meeting place of the surrealistic scene of Brussels. Paul Rouge, René Magritte, Louis Scutenaire, Marcel Lecomte, Charles Plisnier, Paul Mariën, ELT Mesens, Georges Remi (Hergé) and a lot of others gathered in the cafe and made it famous. Inside you can still find a photograph where a number of the above mentioned posed for eternity in front of the pub. The pope of surrealism, Rene Magritte, organized in this pub, well before he got famous, his first exposition of drawings and paintings.

Outside of La Fleur en Papier Doré

After the war some members of the Cobra movement visited the cafe such as Pierre Alechinsky, Christian Dotremont, Marcel Mariën, Paul Colinet and Jean Dubuffet, beside Flemish writers like Louis Paul Boon, Simon Vinkenoog, Jan Walravens and Hugo Claus. The last person mentioned in the list celebrated here in 1955 in a rather tumultuous manner his first marriage.

All these great minds created under the guidance of the inimitable Geert Van Bruaene this disconcerting melting pot of antics and kitsch such as you can see today. Some citations written on the walls of the pub like: ‘ Philologue, il est permis de se taire dans toutes les langues’ or ‘Chacun a droit a 24 heures de liberté par jour’, perfectly reflect the state of mind of these glorious days.

Until now the “Het Goudblommeke in Papier or La Fleur en Papier Dore” remained a scene where several poetical and cultural events take place. This rich history didn’t escape to the attention of the Brussels Government which proceeded in 1997 to the protection of the facade, the roof, and the first three rooms on the groundfloor as well as parts of the furniture, all the paintings, drawings and aphorisms.

Cimetière de Laeken

by Vincent January 22, 2009
written by Vincent

The Laeken cemetery is the oldest of all the cemeteries in Brussels still in function. Very popular among tourists and residents alike it’s often dubbed as the little brother of the Père-Lachaise cemetery in Paris. The Cimetière de Laeken rose massively in popularity when the Royal family chose the adjacent Notre-Dame de Laeken Church as their burial grounds. Since then it became the final resting place of Belgian’s rich and famous Personalities bringing some outstanding examples of 19th century funerary art. By looking at the titles engraved in the stones one notices profusion of ministers, mayors, advisers, renowned artist or high ranking officers.

Open from Tuesday to Sunday: 8:30AM – 4:30PM

Snowing in Brussels

by Vincent January 11, 2009
written by Vincent

2009 so far has brought us some unusually cold weather that has swept for a week now all over Europe. Some cities of Belgium have even broken records for the lowest temperatures of the last decade. The cold wave did not only bring negative aspects though as it dramatically changed for a brief moment our Brussels landscape blessing it with a beautiful coat of white snow.  Wanting to capture this special moment I took my camera out early in the morning after work to take these photos of Brussels under the snow.

A Winter Wonderland scene from Woluwe-Saint-Lambert on my street

I doubt the Villo! bikes rentals will be very popular today

Entering what seems to be a deserted Georges Henri Park

Not much more people here either

The monument dedicated to political prisoners seems even more eerie

Notre-Dame de Laeken

by Vincent December 31, 2008
written by Vincent

l’Église Notre-Dame de Laeken (Our Lady of Laeken Church) is well known as the official burial place for Belgium’s kings and queens. The Construction of this church began in 1854 to honor the memory of the first Queen of the Belgians Louise-Marie, who died in 1850.

The architect J. Poelaert was chosen after a competition was held, but he resigned from the project in 1865. This led to many interruptions in building work, which was finally restarted between 1904 and 1911 by his fellow architect von Schmidt from Munich.
With the assistance of the architect Groothaert, von Schmidt built a new facade in front of the first one and completed the towers and steeple. The royal crypt, the windows and furnishings with their Gothic character make the church one of the most important Neogothic buildings in the region.

Just around the corner from the Recyclart, under the train bridge at the rue des Tanneurs you will find the impressive work left by the Collective FARM PROD during one of their live painting sessions. Pretty amazing work that’s worth going to take a look if you enjoy urban Art.
