Old town wall

Tour noire

written by Vincent

La tour noire or in English the black tower located right behind the St. Catherine Church is one of the few remnants of the old town wall that was demolished in the 16th Century. The tower was saved from demolition simply because it could be used as a storage facility and nowadays houses a little museum devoted to the old port of Brussels.

A good place to spot the Eurocrats in Brussels during lunch time or after hours is Place du Luxembourg located just next to the European parliament.

Notre-Dame-aux-Riches-Claires

written by Vincent

L’église Notre-Dame-aux-Riches-Claires is a little gem of a church  made all of red bricks dating back from 1617 and build in the Flemish Renaissance style. The layout was made for two distinct purposes. The main part was used by the congregation and the other adjacent building was a convent for nuns that was converted into privately owned apartments in the 19th century.

The gallery stands between the house of cats at one end and the luxurious Hotel Métropole at the other

It is decorated by a group of children carved by Albert Desenfans

Square Ambiorix

Square Ambiorix is a bowl of fresh air located just 120 meters away from Shuman that is home of the EU institutions. Its really worth the short walk if you ever are in that part of Brussels since it also has around 20 very interesting buildings dating back from 1890. One of them being the art nouveau masterpiece house of Saint Cyr.

You will always find a large number of flowers all along Square Ambiorix
