Art Brussels, has grown to become one of the most renowned contemporary Art expo of Europe. Since it’s inception in 1968, the galleries have multiplied, innovated, proposed a range of very trendy creations. The latest 37th edition offered it’s 25 000 visitors impressive numbers: 150 galleries representing over 2000 artists all four corners of the world.

The galleries are split into four main areas, The upcoming artists are highlighted under DISCOVERY. The PRIME section, is for the more established international artists. The all new INVITED area showcases a younger generation of international galleries that have a bold and pioneering approach to art that attempt to put into the question our traditional art gallery models.REDISCOVERY, focuses on 20th century art, this section presents artists, either living or otherwise deceased, who are have been under-recognized or forgotten by their peers.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic had cancelled this year’s 38th Edition I wanted to share a selection of my favorite works of art from their last exhibit as seen below:

Square

Statue Joies de Printemps

by Vincent June 3, 2020
written by Vincent

The “Square des Griottiers” or “Square of the cherries trees” takes its name from the three big morello cherry trees planted here. This is the same type of cherry tree used to produces the famous cherry beer Kriek in Brussels. Located in in Schaerbeek at the crossroads of the avenues of Félix Maréchal, Emile Max and Milcamps, This is tiny island of lush greenery is a little haven of peace in an urban residential area. The square is best known for the little statuette “Joies de Printemps” which translates to Joys of spring in English.

The paved path allows visitors to discover the wide variety of shrubs, grasses and flowers that adorn the square. In addition, a fourth sour cherry tree will be planted while two benches will be installed.

The Joys of Spring sculpture by Eugène Canneel is at the center of the Square des Griottiers. Interesting fact, both the cherry and the donkey are symbols of this municipality of Schaarbeek, as in the old days cherries who grew here had to be carried on the back of donkeys to be sold on the Brussels markets downtown.

Bar des Amis

Themed bar with a great atmosphere and interior in the lively Saint-Catherine neighborhood of Brussels. Great choice of beer and drinks available,  bartenders are kind and gentle. Lovely long & cool bar counter. Interior is very interesting, lots of vintage items on the walls , bottles, enamel plates. I especially loved the after ski theme on the wall.

by Vincent July 16, 2010
written by Vincent

The largest fresco of Belgium can now be admired along the walls of the De Wand tram station in Laeken. Just a stone’s throw from the Atomium along tramway lines 4, 19 and 23 the De Wand station is a symbolic crossing point between the suburbs and the city of Brussels. Entitled “The Walk”, this massive work of art was created by 30 graffiti artists from Belgium and beyond was part of a grant from the Brussels’ region for the renovation of public spaces and has grown over the years to become Europe’s biggest graffiti wall with it 4500 square meters. The total cost of the project was of 200 000€ where 30 artists worked for 9 days and no less than 6000 spray paint cans were used during the process.
