Europe’s biggest graffiti wall along tram station De Wand

The largest fresco of Belgium can now be admired along the walls of the De Wand tram station in Laeken. Just a stone’s throw from the Atomium along tramway lines 4, 19 and 23 the De Wand station is a symbolic crossing point between the suburbs and the city of Brussels. Entitled “The Walk”, this massive work of art was created by 30 graffiti artists from Belgium and beyond was part of a grant from the Brussels’ region for the renovation of public spaces and has grown over the years to become Europe’s biggest graffiti wall with it 4500 square meters. The total cost of the project was of 200 000€ where 30 artists worked for 9 days and no less than 6000 spray paint cans were used during the process.

I liked the illusion created by this mural of an extra pair of windows on the walls of this Artisanal leatherwork shop. I stumbled into it after the elevator ride that connects the ville haute and ville basse of Brussels (the Upper Town and lower Town) on the corner of rue de l’épée and Rue Haute.

Tribute to Hergé fresco by Mezzo in Laeken

Mural art realized by Mezzo, the creator of the King of the Flies comic strip illustrations as a tribute to Hergé. Mezzo of his real name Pascal Mesemberg was born in Drancy in 1960. At the age of 17, he began his career by sending illustrations in various magazines and graphzines Paris where he published his first comic strip in Métal Aventure and then collaborated with Zoulou and L’Écho des Savanes. After becoming famous working with Michel Pirus in 1989 he moved to Paris where he contributes regularly to the journal de Mickey as an illustrator and realizes the covers for Stephen King’s Librio collection novels. He also still publishes short stories in L’Écho des Savanes with his accomplice Pirus.

Caroline Baldwin mural

This 160 square meters Caroline Baldwin mural is found at 10 Place de Ninove, 1000 Brussels. Made by D. Vandegeerde and G. Oreopoulos of Art Mural SPRL it illustrates in 12 images the series of comic strips made by André Taymans and Bruno Wesel of Castermin of Caroline Baldwin a female private detective. Each of the images is featured in one of the buildings windows who are all brought together into one thanks to the full moon in the background.

Jef Aérosol street art in Brussels

A very nice example of Stencil graffiti art found at 7 Rue du Chêne, Brussels made by one of the fist French street art pioneers from the 80′s, Jef Aérosol. His mark has been on the walls of cities cities all over the world such as: Amsterdam, Beijing, Brussels, Chicago, Lisbon, London, New-York Paris, Rome,etc.

Les Rêves de Nic

The 160 square meters Les Rêves de Nic (Little Nic) comics strip mural is found at 40 Rue des Fabriques, 1000 Brussels. Hermann Huppen said he had been heavily inspired by American Author Winsor McCay’s Little Nemo in Slumberland when creating the Little Nic comics. Less popular than some of his other work such as Bernard Prince or Comanche only three albums ever were published. The mural of Nic followed by a whole army of Safari animals is still popular with the passer-by’s nonetheless.

Cori le Moussaillon mural

The 48 square meters Cori le Moussaillon comics strip mural is found at 21 Rue des Fabriques, 1000 Brussels. Six albums were created by Bob de Moor (Robert Frans Marie De Moor) from 1951 to 1993. A true masters of the Belgian Clear Line style, he cooperated during his career with other famous Belgianc Comic strip artists such as Hergé and Willy Vandersteen. Growing up in a port city he developed from an early age an interest for drawing sailing ships.

Blake et Mortimer Mural

The adventures of Blake and Mortimer in Brussels haven’t always been easy. The first mural where they were featured uppon at rue du Rempart eventually was brought crumbling down when the house that had welcomed them was demolished. Luckily their absence was short lived and not so long after they reappeared, this time on rue du Houblon. The 100 square meters Blake et Mortimer Mural was created to honor it’s now deceased author, Belgian comics artist and writer Edgar P. Jacobs. Definitely one of my all time favorites in Brussels!

Asterix et Obelix mural

This colorful and energetic mural representing The Adventures of Asterix is found on the back wall of a public soccer and basketball playground at 33 rue de la Buanderie. Created by the duo Albert Uderzo (text) and René Goscinny (illustrations) this extremely popular comic strip series has had 33 albums published which have been translated in over 100 languages since 1959.

Lucky Luke Comic Strip Mural

This 180 square meters Lucky Luke Comic Strip Mural painting was completed by D. Vandegeerde and G. Oreopoulos in 1992. Created by Morris and now with over 70 albums published the Lucky Luke comics is one of the most famous and best selling comic books series in Europe. Few might have noticed but a glimpse of the city of Brussels was added in the mural if you look close enough in the background… In the middle of the desert there is a mirage of one of the famous landmarks in Brussels: The Atomium.
