Brosella Folk and Jazz Festival in Osseghem Park

The open-air Green Theatre in Laeken’s Osseghem Park, hosted this year again the 34th edition of the free and annual Brosella Folk & Jazz Festival. Twenty concerts are spread over two days and featured in this lovely leafy-green setting. The first day is dedicated to folk musicians and the second to jazz. The pictures are taken on the second day and feature the Avishai Cohen Quintet. More information about the festival itself can be found here.

Zinneke Parade

Born 10 years ago as part of Brussels 2000, European Capital of Culture the Zinneke Parade has now grown into a biennial exuberant celebration where around 2500 local volunteers from various schools, collectives and organizations converge into the city center in a carnival atmosphere. Each edition has it’s own theme where participants create their colorful and extravagant costumes while various musicians, dancers and actors join in for the fun in what could be best described as a street opera. This year’s 6th Edition theme was : A table/Aan tafe best translated into “Have a meal” or “Come to the Table”.

Bruxelles les Bains

Every summer from mid-July to mid-August a stretch of the canal Willebroek is transformed into to a waterside tropical beach scene with the help of lots of sand and palms trees. The holiday atmosphere of Bruxelles les Bains is guaranteed with the multitude of small themed bars and restaurants serving specialty foods and drinks from (among other places) Cuba, Brazil, Colombia, Congo, India, Spain, Vietnam and Morocco.

Visitors can attend daily free concerts or play various sports such as: Rugby, Football, Volleyball, Pétanque, climbing, Frisbee,etc. Special attractions for kids are also featured.

Meyboom 2008 celebrations preview

A repetition for the Meyboom Celebrations was held today at the Grand Place a week ahead of the official date of the 9th of August. This is the longest lasting folkloric tradition of the city of Brussels held yearly since 1213 and celebrating it’s 693rd edition. The celebration features a procession of eight colorful costumed giants and a marching band on its journey from the Place du Sablon to the Grand Place.

The Recyclart is a non-profit urban pilot project with the vocation of turning the old abandoned train station of Chapelle-Kapellekerk and its abandoned neighborhoods into a vibrant multi-purpose cultural center proposing everything from concerts to exhibitions. The bands featured in the pictures were Comets of fire and Creature With The Atom Brain. The agenda of upcoming events can be found here.

Brussels Jazz Marathon 2008

The Brussels Jazz Marathon 2008 just ended this week-end for its 13th consecutive edition. 125 concerts were spread out from Friday to Sunday through outdoor stages for the biggest venues and the remaining larger portion indoors of around 50 bars, pubs and cafés of Brussels. And best of All it’s once again 100% FREE… Here are some pictures of Saturday’s evening.

Another Cool event nearby the main concert stage was the Piknik Elektronik at Place Du Musée (just next to the Mont des Arts) which featured from noon until 22:00 a set of DJ’s playing electronic music. All this was setup around 800 square meters of green grass lawn recreating a park/festival rave atmosphere.

Fete de l’Iris Abba Mania concert

The main concert of the 11th of Mai at the Fête de l’Iris featured at 20:00 ABBA Mania. This band created in 1999 has been one of the most successful ABBA cover band to date playing 18 consecutive weeks at London ‘s West End Theatre. Famous around the globe they have to date traveled as far as Tahiti, Mexico, Venezuela, North America, Germany, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Austria, Holland, Denmark, Sweden, France & many others.

The first of the two main acts on the free concerts of the Fête de l’Iris started at 18:00 on the 11th of Mai with the Belgian Beatles tribute band Abbey Road setup again right next to the Royal Palace of Brussels. Formed in 1987 the band made of Yves Laloux, Alain Pire, Dimitri Deboutte and Christian Willems has been a growing success. They have played more than four hundred concerts to date with crowds up to 60 000 people strong like when they opened for Jacques Dutronc.

The third part and main act of the Fête de l’Iris on the 10 of Mai was featuring the band Ozark Henry performing at 22:00. Involved through his life in several bands Piet Goddaer really gained recognition and celebrity when his Ozark Henry solo act which his 4th and latest album was released in 1999.
